A winery, a brewery and a distillery – to Greyfriars, Hogs Back & Silent Pool with Grape & Grain Tours
If visiting a brewery, a vineyard and a distillery, with lunch at a country gastropub in the middle sounds like a bit of a dream come true, then Grape and Grain Tours are on to a good thing.
Tours officially start in Spring 2018 and we were lucky enough to have a sneak preview earlier this week. I went on the Surrey Hills Tour, which took in Greyfriars Vineyard, The Hogs Back Brewery and Silent Pool Distillery. Being used to getting myself around vineyards, being picked up by luxury mini-coach from Guildford Station was a real treat.
Each place we visited has its own style and charm. The thing that ties them together (even more than alcohol!) as everyone on the tour mentioned afterwards, is passion. Owners Mike and Hilary at Greyfriars told us about how they had transformed a simple vineyard into an estate with 3 vineyards growing and producing award winning wines. Barrie at Hog’s Back kept us amused with a tour of the diminutive brewery that nevertheless supplies beer far and wide. Finally Tom told us the fascinating story of both the Silent Pool itself, of how the gin is made and how the brand has grown. At each venue there was a guided tasting which brought the processes to life.
I’m not going to go into the facts shared or the funny tales as I don’t want to ruin the day for anyone else who goes, suffice it to say that the individual tours, held together by Joel’s engaging chat during the journey through lovely countryside in between, were pitched to appeal to people with little knowledge or a lot, making it perfect for families or groups of friends as well as couples or individuals. From our point of view, if you’ve never visited a vineyard before, it really is a great way to start.
Initially Grape & Grain Tours will alternate between Surrey and Hampshire on Saturdays, starting with the Hampshire tour on March 3rd. The day starts with railway station pick-up at 10am with drop off at 5pm and cost £99. You can book online and of course they do vouchers too!
Wine Cellar Door was a guest of Grape and Grain tours on a shortened version of the future tour.
