Featured wine - Furleigh Estate Bacchus Fumé 2015
If you’re at all familiar with English wines, the chances are you will have tried Bacchus, but probably not like this one from Dorset’s Furleigh Estate. A proportion of the wine has been aged in American oak and some ripe Chardonnay added to the blend, giving it a deeper colour and richer flavour than most examples. On the nose, the usual Bacchus aromas of elderflower, nettle and grass are all present and correct, but overlaid with riper, more tropical aromas of melon and pineapple and creamy vanilla notes. Plentiful fruit flavours make this an approachable and deliciously appealing English white.
Think you know Bacchus? Think again. Like so many English wines, it’s not quite what you might expect.
