UKVA 2013 Award Winners

Awards are certainly not the “be all and end all” of quality in English and Welsh wines. It’s important to consider the body making the award, which is why we just consider the following National and International awards – UKVA, Decanter and IWSC. It’s also important to note that competitions require quite a lot of wine to be entered which may not be possible especially in the early years of wine-making.

Looking at awards is a good way to get an initial indication of quality, though. The full list of UKVA Award Winners 2013 details each award winning wine. Of those, the top awards are:

The Gore-Brown Trophy for Best Large Scale Production Wine: Nutbourne Vineyards – Nutty 2010 (sparkling)
McAlpine Winemaker of the Year: Piers Greenwood at New Hall.

Since the purpose of this site is to guide you to cellar doors of interest, I have summarised the full awards into a way that many will find sacriligeous. I have neither classified the medals into their full gold / silver / bronze categories and nor have I listed each individual wine. You will see that I have listed the award winning vineyards in alphabetical order; those with a link have a cellar door.

There are other complications as a smaller vineyard will not have its own winemaker and their wine might be made by another vineyard on the list. A vineyard only winning awards for sparkling wine may or may not make other types of wine.

However, we will defend it as its purpose is to provide another type of signpost to help you navigate your way to try and buy English & Welsh wines you will love.
