A’Beckett’s is an 11 acre Wiltshire vineyard a few miles south of Devizes. First planted in 2001, a’Beckett’s is one of the few English vineyards growing Auxerrois, a variety more commonly found in Alsace. They produce a range of English Sparkling and Still Wines along with Cider and Apple Juice from their orchards.

Back in 1999, Paul Langham was bored of working in the corporate world. One Saturday in June,  drinking a glass of wine he said out of the blue to to his wife Lynn “we must be able to do this” and that is how the whole adventure in English Wine started.  Lynn was able to find the right land in the right location and in April 2001 the first vines were planted and the first vintage harvested in 2003.

With no experience of farming or wine making, they read a lot and asked many questions of  fellow vineyards and of vineyard consultant Hans Schliefer.

The a’Beckett’s site had been a successful fruit farm and orchard for over 50 years and with soils made up of greensand lying over chalk; a well drained site between 55 and 60 metres above sea level that benefits from being sheltered from the prevailing westerly winds making a perfect location for growing vines.

While the English wines produced at a’Beckett’s are predominately still, they do make sparkling wine. Paul’s driving passion when establishing the vineyard was to produce red wine which may account for the 65% Pinot Noir planting.

Littleton Lodge (see Accommodation) is not part of the same business, but their luxury B&B overlooks the vineyard and a’Beckett’s wines are served.
