At Harrow & Hope, it’s all about the soil and the site for owners Henry and Kaye Laithwaite. Although purchase was subject to all of the usual tests, Henry knew the site had potential as soon as he saw it – the sloping ground with varying levels of chalk and flint provide a perfect situation for vines with the pinots near the top of the hill and chardonnay further down a gentle slope.

Origins of the Name

Over half a million years, this part of the Chiltern Hills was shaped by the retreating Thames, leaving behind an environment ideal for creating world-class sparkling wine. Alas, the same flint rocks that make the single vineyard estate a dream for Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, also make it a nightmare to work and cultivate – as two broken harrows testify. But then, as the owners say, “nothing worth treasuring ever came easy”.

The Wines

Grown, picked and expertly blended by the same team on the same site, each glass of Harrow & Hope is a tribute to traditional method viticulture and winemaking, to the unique characteristics of Marlow and to the spirit of adventure.

Different clones and oaking of a part of each base wine allows around 20 components for the blending process, with the aim of producing the best sparkling wines each season will allow. These can include a classic blend, Rosé, Blanc de Blancs and Blanc de Noirs as grapes from each vintage indicate.

PRO TIP

With such a new vineyard on a relatively small scale, quantities are limited and the first couple of vintages have sold out on pre-order. It’s well worth joining their mailing list, particularly if you live in the Marlow area, for the opportunity to order wines and visit the vineyard on their sociable collection days.
