A quick coffee at Bolney Estate

After my resolution to visit 10 English vineyards this year, the first one was quite accidental…

I was driving west along the A272 to visit my aunt in Eastbourne when I saw a sign for Bolney Estate. I’d recently seen the Cuvée Rosé as the first English wine on Naked Wines, so the name was front of mind and the nice clear welcoming signs for the Vineyard and Café and trustworthy-looking opening hours lured me in.

I didn’t have much time, so just had a coffee in a delightful setting with blackboards offering fresh local produce. I looked in the small shop off the café, bought a couple of bottles to taste at home and had a nice chat with the friendly lady working there about the vineyard. Sam Linter the winemaker flew past on her way to an interview with Japanese media, so Bolney’s reputation is clearly spreading far and wide.

Bolney Estate is only just off the A23 south of Gatwick and definitely worth a detour if you’re in the area. I’m going to come back for a proper tour & tasting as soon as the weather warms up a bit. It’s welcoming and interesting enough to be a good halfway place to meet some of my Sussex friends, even those who aren’t so interested in wine.
