The Charles Palmer vineyards sit just to the west of the medieval Cinque Port town of Winchelsea, steeped in wine trading history.
Just a mile from the sea, the location of Charles Palmer vineyards provides a beneficial climate, having higher night time temperatures, reducing the risk of frosts and helping to ripen the grapes. The carefully chosen aspect of the slopes and the soil that the vines are planted in is perfect for growing the varieties of grapes used in their sparkling wines.
A family business
It is very much a family business with the first vintage produced in 2009. Each bottle has its own unique number; labels are signed and hand applied indicating that each bottle meets the family’s exacting standards.
The 2017 vintage marks a new milestone in the history of the house of Charles Palmer. From this year on Charles Palmer will be making their wines all in house. A new winery is being set up on site. Charles’ son, Robert Palmer will be taking on the new role of assistant wine maker to Will Davenport, and eventually he will take over as head winemaker.
Will Davenport, accomplished as one of England’s top winemakers, has found great success with his own wines, and now needs to concentrate more time to his own business.
A place to stay
The historic family farmhouse dates from the 16th century and is owned by the National Trust; it offers atmospheric bed and breakfast. Just 5 miles from the stunning town of Rye and 7 miles from Hastings Old Town, Wickham Manor is the perfect base from which to explore the delights of East Sussex, even other local vineyards if you wish.
The area also has an enviable reputation for quality restaurants serving local produce
