Chartham Vineyard is one of East Kent’s newest vineyards situated at Burnt House Farm in Chartham close to the historic City of Canterbury in Kent.

Location

Chartham Vineyard at Burnt House Farm is located just below the North Downs Way, a footpath used for centuries by pilgrims on their inspirational journeys from Winchester to Canterbury Cathedral. Below the vineyard, the River Stour curves through the valley to the historic City of Canterbury three miles to the north east.

Chartham Railway Station (on the line from Charing Cross to Canterbury) is adjacent to the vineyard; it should only take a couple of minutes to walk.

A Family Enterprise

Chartham is owned by Dr Roz Waller and her husband Richard Goodenough and managed by their son, Andy Goodenough.

Wines and Winemaking

Wines are sold direct from the cellar door wine shop in an ancient barn in the farm yard. The initial still wines, Pinot Noir, Bacchus and Pinot Noir, will be joined by the inaugural sparkling wine in 2018.

Initially Chartham Vineyard are working with the highly respected John Worontschak and Matthieu Elzinga of Litmus Wines to turn their grapes into wine. The longer term plan is for Chartham Vineyard to have its own winery at Burnt House Farm.

Art and Wine

Second only to the Goodenough’s love of fine wine, is their love of fine art. Their tasting room (housed in a newly renovated cow barn) is used as both a teaching space for art and wine courses and a gallery for local artists, exhibitions, demonstrations and other creative or cultural events.

The Tasting Room / Gallery and Barn are available for private hire and there is ample parking in the farmyard.

Chartham Station is just around the corner from the vineyard. It’s on the line between London’s Charing Cross and Canterbury West.

The No 1 bus on the Canterbury / Ashford route stops opposite the entrance to Chartham Vineyard.

Why not cycle to Chartham Vineyard along the Great Stour Way? This 3 mile long traffic free multi-user route following National Cycle Route 18 provides a beautiful and tranquil journey along the banks of the River Stour.

Enjoy cycling through heritage sites like Chartham paper mill and Milton church whilst passing across the river and through marshes and meadows enjoying river views, kingfishers and other wildlife if you’re lucky!
