The first wines were released from Holy Vale Vineyard on St Mary’s in the Scilly Isles in 2015.
Cellar Door & Winery
The vineyard at Holy Vale is one of several sites on St Mary’s that grow Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris to make their own wines.
Obviously the Scillies is a pretty marginal region for growing wines, so not every harvest may be commercially successful, but the cellar door is still worth a visit for its very pretty outlook. There is a tasting room and an excellent cellar door shop that also sells a range of quality wines from abroad.
Where to Stay
The vineyard is owned by the same people as the delightful Star Castle Hotel. If you are booking a single room, the Guard Rooms are great fun and highly recommended. Tours and tastings at the vineyard can be booked to include a minibus to and from the hotel.
We went for a long weekend, during which is perfectly feasible to pop over to St Martin’s to visit their vineyard and generally enjoy a thoroughly relaxing break. As seasoned visitors to the Scillies will know, however, it is best not to visit on a tight timescale as weather conditions can easily close in, leaving one stranded on the islands; an option that can easily be enjoyed if one does not have pressing arrangements elsewhere.
If you plan to visit in the summer, call ahead to enjoy freshly caught lobster with new potatoes and home grown salad on the terrace overlooking the vines.
