Nestled in the Yorkshire Wolds, above the small East Riding town of South Cave, Little Wold Vineyard has panoramic views down to the River Humber.
A Family Farm
Market Place Farm has been in the Wilson family for over 70 years. The farm was bought in 1947 by Robert Wilson when the ‘Cave Castle’ estate was split up. Over the years, the farm has been home to beef cattle, poultry, cereal growing and vegetables.
Planting began at Little Wold in Spring 2012, inspired by a trip to South Africa. To keep costs down, everything was done by hand and just in case it didn’t quite go to plan, a field was chosen tucked away from sight.
2000 vines were initially planted. This was followed by another 1000 two years later. For the first three years everything that grew (including the grapes) had to be cut off and thrown away. This is to develop the rootstock and encourage the vines to take in the chalky minerals of the terrior. Following this in 2014 a small harvest was taken and the grapes were put into a blend with nearby Ryedale Vineyards. The first wines under the Little Wold name were produced from the 2015 vintage.
Bespoke Wedding Venue
The planting of vines in a tucked away field proved to be fortuitous as the views from the site are rather special and led Little Wold along another path in the business – hosting marquee weddings.
Couples and their guests have exclusive use of the venue, allowing the team at Little Wold to help each couple have their special day in their own way.
Visitor facilities will be enhanced with a smart new tasting room planned for 2019.
