Painshill Park is an elegant 18th century landscape garden just outside London. Its 158 acre site includes a lake, which is overlooked by the vineyard.
LOCATION OF PAINSHILL PARK
It is hard to believe that Painshill Park is less than a mile off the A3 at Cobham and only just inside the M25. It is a country estate of just the right size, by which we mean that it looks expansive but can quite easily be explored in its entirety in a couple of hours. You can even take your dog if he or she is happy to stay on a lead.
The vineyard itself is tiny by commercial standards, on a south-facing slope overlooking the lake. Sparkling Wine is made by the respected Bluebell Vineyard Estate and is available only from the Painshill shop.
As a standalone vineyard, it would perhaps not make an exciting visit, but the context of stunning gardens, where every view is a picture postcard and the astonishing fact that it is all run by a charity with volunteer workers makes it truly a pleasure.
OTHER ATTRACTIONS WITHIN PAINSHILL
There is a lake, a grotto, a Chinese bridge and they even have a Temple of Bacchus, dedicated to the Roman god of wine – how cool is that? Sadly, though, it is in need of major restoration. If you are able to contribute, find out more or donate online.
The gift shop features a well-chosen selection of items and greetings cards, and includes their own wine when stocks allow.
