Sharpham wines are surprisingly little known outside the South West of England given the consistently good quality of wine they have produced over many years.

Occupying land in the bend of the river and overlooking the River Dart means that a self-guided tour of the vineyards at Sharpham is absolutely stunning. They do various options of tour with a glass of wine or with an informative small-group tasting. There is a small shop with all of the wines on display as well as Sharpham’s own cheeses.

The Vineyard Kitchen serves dishes made from locally caught fish and shellfish cooked in a wood fired oven, local meats grilled over Sharpham’s own vine prunings, as well as salads and simple puddings. Chef Chris Sherville has put together dishes, with influences from the Middle and Far East, with the aim of creating an exciting new alfresco café experience.

Booking a table for lunch is a good idea (01803 732178) – it gives you a better chance of being under cover if it rains, too!

Sharpham Estate is just a few miles south of Totnes and well sign-posted from the A381, so it is on your way if you are heading to places like Salcombe and Kingsbridge in the South Hams, or to Dartmouth. We think it’s well worth a detour if you are anywhere in the area and also works well as a day trip from Exeter.
