Wellhayes Vineyard is set on the edge of the Brendon Hills and occupies an ideal location on a South facing slope overlooking the small village of Clayhanger in mid-Devon. The red Devonian soil is deep and well-drained, which suits the vines, whose roots go straight down.
Simon and Alison Routh planted 150 vines in May 2008 to test the suitability of the soil.
Grape Varieties at Wellhayes Vineyard
The first vines were planted by hand and they started with just 5 rows, 1 each of Reichensteiner, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Bacchus.
In 2011, the vineyard was expanded to a full hectare with further Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Reichensteiner to bring the total number of vines to 2,500.
The first commercial harvest was in 2014 which produced 3.5 tonnes of grapes, made into 2,000 bottles of Sparkling Wine, which were released in September 2016.
More than Just a Vineyard
Classical music concerts are a regular feature of life at Wellhayes Vineyard – no doubt a perfect accompaniment to their sparkling wine.
Wellhayes Vineyard is situated 2/3rd of a mile north of the village of Clayhanger.
From the M5 leave the motorway at Junction 25 (Taunton) and follow the signs for the A358 to Minehead.
On the outskirts of Taunton at a roundabout with the Cross Keys pub on the right, take the B3227 to Wiveliscombe. Continue on this road through Wiveliscombe.
1 mile after the small hamlet of Waterrow, (Rock Inn on your right), turn left signposted Clayhanger and then right after 200 yards. Follow the lane for almost a mile and, after a sharp turn to the left, as the lane starts to go down the hill, Wellhayes Vineyard is on the left.
The nearest train station is Tiverton Parkway (2 hours from London Paddington).
Taxis from Tiverton Parkway to Wellhayes Vineyard take approximately 20 minutes.
Local Taxis are Jolly Jaunts (01884 840979) and Parkway Taxis (01884 38899).
